How to Get Back on Track
Revisit Past Accomplishments
The road to getting back on track may be difficult. A good place to start is by looking
back at
what you have already accomplished.
Create a list of accomplishments from the past few years. Did you
get a raise at your job? Did you do something exciting or
creative? Write it all down!
I have a stack of old journals and planners that I will
probably never throw away. Every since
2003, I have kept at least one journal and a monthly planner. I use the journal to write down my thoughts,
experiences, and goals. I use the
planner to create plans and strategies to accomplish those goals. At the end of each year, I go back and review
my list of goals and what I’ve accomplished.
Going back and seeing what you have accomplished gives a
boost of confidence. When you look back
at your past accomplishments, you may recall how far away they seemed. Since you were able to accomplish those
things, you are able to accomplish your new list of goals.
Reinforce Your Resolutions
Reinforcing your resolutions means really understanding the
reason you made a resolution in the first place. Sometimes we want something but not because
we really want it, but because we think we should want it. This often happens when we compare ourselves
with others around us.
Your resolutions should be meaningful to you. They should be something that is going to
enrich your life and the lives of others.
One of my resolutions is to connect more with the people
that I know and make many new friends and contacts this year. I also set a goal to connect more with all of
my Facebook
fans, and Twitter followers. This is a very important goal to me because
connecting with people is important to me.
Don’t Wait Until the Conditions Are
Perfect
Sometimes we can put our goals on hold because we are
waiting for the conditions to be perfect before. The circumstances are rarely perfect and
waiting for them to become perfect usually makes your goals harder to reach.
I have a friend who-for the past few years-has been talking
about getting back into shape. I like to
invite him to come with me when I go for a run.
He will only go if it’s not too early, not too sunny, or not too
cold. You don’t get into shape by just
working out when it’s convenient. You
get into shape by making a habit exercising often no matter what.
That is also true for every other resolution that you set
for yourself. Are you procrastinating
because you are waiting for the perfect time?
When I started
Potential 2 Success the conditions were far from perfect. I had a full time job, I was taking 6 courses
in college during a summer session, and I had several other
responsibilities. On top of that, I had
no idea how to even buy a domain name, let alone build, market, and write for a
site.
But I did it all and within six months Start
Meaningful Conversations made it to the “most popular” list on Stumbleupon,
and Delicious. Driving tens of thousands
of visitors to my site.
The timing seemed wrong, but I did it anyway and I’m glad I
did! If I didn’t take the leap then, P2S
would still be an idea in my head. Make
a commitment to start today even if
the conditions are not perfect.
Do Something Everyday
Do something every day that brings you closer to your
goal. This is especially important when
you are trying to get back on track. The
reason doing something every day is important is because you want to build lasting
habits that you apply all year long.
A few years ago one of my resolutions was to greatly improve
my running time. When I set the goal I
wasn’t in running shape at all. And when
I began running, my muscles were so sore that I couldn’t run every day. On the days that I didn’t run, I did other
things that would make me a better runner.
I read magazines about running. I
researched what was the best sneaker for my foot type and I went to the gym and
did some weight lifting in order to improve my overall conditioning.
No matter what your goal is, there is something that you can
do every day to get you closer to reaching that goal.
Conclusion
Its possible that you will be dealing with the same
resolutions 5 years from now if you do not take action to accomplish them now. My father once told me that whenever you want
to do something in life, just do it so that you can move on to something else.
I am going to give that same advice to you. Begin to work on those goals until they are a
reality so that you can move on to bigger and better things.
